Fast Weight Loss: Pros And Cons

Society has people striving to look a certain way and a great amount of people are looking into fast weight loss to achieve these results. To put it frankly, fast weight loss isn’t all it’s cut out to be. Aside from it probably not working as adequately as one would like, it is also an unhealthy route to take. In the end, if someone does manage to lose weight quickly, it will probably be all gained back even faster.

To anyone that has ever looked into quick weight loss, they are probably familiar with the hundreds of diet pills, snacks or drinks promising to help. After trying these pills, most people find that the statements on print or commercials aren't very accurate at what they promise to do. Later on, reality sets in that the people seen on some of the diet pill commercials attain results that aren't typical for most people. Many experts have argued that weight loss commercials are known to be extremely deceptive at what they claim; it is not common for people to lose the weight that quickly.

Not only do experts claim that diet pills don’t work the way they should, but they are also known to be dangerous. There have been diet pills that have been taken off the shelves because they contain ingredients that cause illnesses or dangerous side effects. An example of an ingredient in diet pills that has been taken off the market would be Fen-phen; it has been linked to people developing heart valve disease. Diet pills have so many different side effects that very few are actually approved by the FDA. The majority of the very few weight loss pills that are still available need to be filled by prescription. There is only one pill that was recently approved by the FDA to be purchased over the counter (Alli).

Aside from the countless number of diet pills, there are also countless amounts of fad diets out there that are all the rage promising to help people with quick weight loss. Many of these fast weight loss diets are depriving the human body of essential nutrients that the body needs to function and be healthy. Many diets have side effects resulting in kidney and liver problems, high blood pressure and osteoporosis, to name a few. While on a diet, many people also suffer from constipation, weakness and even dehydration. In many of the fad diets that are so popular today, the long term health risks on people have not even been evaluated.

All in all, if someone does manage to lose weight quickly, it’s fairly safe to state that the results aren’t permanent. While taking pills or on diets, metabolisms change. If a person is reducing their usual consumption of food while on a diet, their metabolism will gradually slow down, since it has less to digest. When someone stops their diet and goes back to eating the way they normally do, they find that their metabolism just isn’t ready. People tend to gain the weight they lost very quickly once they resume their regular routine; possibly gaining a few pounds more than before.

The best way to lose weight is to do it gradually. Eating healthy and following the essential food pyramid is the best route to take. Simply walking for 15-30 minutes a day is enough to be healthy and keep the metabolism working efficiently, not to mention the benefits for the heart. Exercise and portion control is a great alternative to fast weight loss, with long lasting results.

Fast weight loss would be ideal, but the fact is, you’re better off taking your time and staying healthy for the long run. If you do things the right way with healthy eating and exercise, you’ll have a happier ending with lasting results. Overall, fast weight loss is probably not even close to being considered a good idea.
