Hindu Push Ups For Strength And Flexibility

Hindu Push Ups are an exercise that have been done by Indian wrestlers for a long time and has been popularized by Matt Furey.

These push-ups require more concentration and focus on form because you must move your body in a circular arc path while doing the push up. In addition there is a certain way to breathe.

I personally like doing these because they not only increase the strength but also flexibility in the chest, arms, shoulders, back, hips, and legs. It really is a full-body exercise.

How To Do A Hindu Push-Up

  1. Get into a regular push up position with your feet spread wide apart, butt up in the air, and your head down, looking back towards your feet. Your arms are straight. Your body should form a nice triangle or pyramid from a side view.
  2. Bend your arms, and lower yourself towards the floor, and then come up through a circular arc towards the sky until your arms are straight again. The arcing motion is done going down as well as up.
  3. Push back to the starting position without bending your arms and keeping your back straight.
  4. Breath in as you are pushing up towards the sky. Exhale as you push back to the starting position.
  5. Steps 2 and 3 count as 1 repetition. Repeat for desired amount.

The down-and-up motion is described as an ocean wave by Furey.

Hindu Push Up Variations

You can bring your feet close together, or even touching. You can also bring your feet closer towards your hands, pushing your butt higher in the air and creating a deeper arc when doing the push-up. This will challenge your flexibility and strength more.
